Catechesis in the early centuries of the church was the work of several years of formation and instruction. The term catechesis is used as term for Christian formation and preparation for baptism and long life discipleship. Catechism is the name given to written works that contains the summary of all the beliefs of the faith that is used as a teaching tool, and it was promulgated by St John Paul 11 on October 11th 1992.

Who is the first catechist?

Parents are the first catechist, first evangelizers and their children’s first teachers.

The catechist is a mediator. He or she facilitates communication between the people and the mystery of God, between subjects amongst them, as well as with the community. He or she is a sharer of the gift of faith. The word ‘catechist’ comes from the Greek word meaning “to echo”.

Catechists echo the words of God to the children and converts. It goes without saying that the catechist’s lifestyle must not contradict what they teach.

Catechists come from all walks of life and all ages, women, men, confirmed teenagers, parents, grandparents, singles and religious. They are ordinary people who generously volunteer their time to share our catholic faith, values and tradition with our generation of Christians and to walk beside/bear witness to them.

They are positive role models who help children grow in faith, spirituality and their relationship with God. Their gift of time and talents has tremendous value because through their words, actions and expression of love for their students, the message of Jesus Christ continues to be spread throughout the world.

Catechists are people who keep the memory of God alive. They keep it alive in themselves and are able to revive it in others.

The patron Saint of catechist is St Robert Bellarmine

His Feast day is 17^th September
