Reconciliation

Sacrament Of Reconciliation: God’s Mercy And Healing

Penance or Confession restores the soul to God’s grace when sin has broken communion with Him and the Church (CCC 1422). Instituted by Christ (John 20:22-23), it offers forgiveness through the ministry of the priest acting in persona Christi.

Sincere confession, contrition, and penance reconcile the penitent to God and the Church. Mortal sins must be confessed; venial sins may also be confessed for spiritual growth (CCC 1456). This sacrament is necessary for participation in Eucharist after mortal sin (CCC 1457).

Saint Thomas Aquinas teaches that Penance is spiritual medicine restoring health to the soul wounded by sin.
