Sacrament Of Matrimony: Covenant Of Love
Marriage is a sacred covenant between a man and a woman, ordered toward mutual good and the procreation and education of children (CCC 1601). It symbolizes Christ’s abiding love for His Church (Eph 5:25-32).
By divine design, marriage mirrors God’s love as reflected in the union of man and woman created in His image (Gen 1:27; CCC 1603-1605). Christ affirms this indissoluble union, “So they are no longer two, but one flesh” (Matt 19:6).
The Symbols of Matrimony
- Exchange of vows: Mutual consent and fidelity.
- Rings: Unbroken love and commitment.
- Unity candle (optional): Two become one in Christ.
